Ring is a movie that frightens viewers simply with the story line and mood it creates. It is successful at sustaining this feeling of mystery and ends very dramatically leaving viewers with a sense of horrific tension. Chills crawl up and down your spine as you watch Sun-ju hug the corpse of the dead girl dumped 25 years ago into a dark well. The monster in the movie is a video more frightening than anything real or imagined. Anyone who watches this video is supposed to die within a week. There are no wounds on the body as the victims die from heart attacks caused by the shock. However, since one cannot find the secret of the video until one sees its, what is to be done?
"The Japanese version focuses on horror but I wanted to emphasize a mood of mystery in the Korean version." says director Kim Dong-Bin whose Ring is his second film after his debut work, a romantic comedy entitled Mom Gets a Lover in 1996. His effort to make a total change in his style with this movie seems to be successful. Viewers are completely caught up in the icy tone and atmosphere of the piece.
