About This DVD

Recognized for his 2005 sensation The King And The Clown, director Lee Joon Ik deviates from his usual male-centered stories to present Sunny, a beautifully rendered war drama about one woman's heroic journey of self-discovery and redemption. Set during the Vietnam War, the story charts the plight of Sunny, a jilted wife who becomes a singing entertainer for Korean troops in Vietnam all the while searching for her missing husband. The film is anchored by a winning performance from Soo Ae (Once In A Summer, A Family) who swaps her virginal image for a more sensual and mature role, along with Uhm Tae Woong (Forever The Moment) and Jung Jin Young (King And The Clown), director Lee's frequent collaborator. Accompanied by an evocative soundscape and breathtaking cinematography, Sunny offers a heartfelt look at one woman's sheer grit and willpower.

Soon Yi (Soo Ae) is a good subservient wife and obedient daughter-in-law who leads a simple, monotonous life in a quite village. Every month at her mother-in-law's insistence, she visits the military base to be with her husband (Uhm Tae Woong) mainly so she could produce a male offspring to continue the family line. But one day during her regular visit, Soon Yi hears shocking news that her husband has suddenly left for Vietnam. While searching for ways to follow him, she meets Jung Man (Jung Jin Young), a sleazy conman who strikes a deal with Soon Yi to take her to Vietnam in exchange for her service as the lead singer of his musical band. But as Soon Yi (now under the stage name of "Sunny") and her entourage soon discover, the reality of entertaining Korean soldiers in the midst of a bloody war turns out to be far more harrowing than they had ever imagined.
