About This Book
The dwarf is Kim Bu-ri, the head of a family living in an impoverished
neighborhood in the outskirts of Seoul, ironically named Happiness District,
Paradise County. When the neighborhood goes into redevelopment, the dwarf's home
is demolished, and with it, the very foundation of his family's life. What
ensues is a tragic tale of economic disempowerment and the resulting loss of
human dignity. Through the eyes of the dwarf's three children as they struggle
desperately to restore the shattered fragments of their lives, Cho Se-hui
sketches the seedy underbelly of a society in the violent throes of
industrialization. When it was first published in 1978, A Dwarf Launches a
Little Ball -- the title story in a collection of twelve linked narratives --
was passionately embraced by the public. Through the enduring figure of the
dwarf, the work managed to give shape to the prevailing sense of individual
despair in a climate of political oppression and acute economic contradictions.
More than two decades later, it remains one of the most powerful indictments of
modern society to emerge from Korean literature. This story was adapted into the
feature film A Dwarf Launches a Little Ball (1980) by Lee Won-se.
About The Author
Cho Se-hui (1942-) was born in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province and graduated from
Kyunghee University with a degree in Korean literature. He debuted in 1965 but
it was with the publication of A Dwarf Launches a Little Ball in the mid-70s
that he emerged as a major writer, capable of refracting the wretched reality of
the alienated classes in contemporary Korea through literary imagination lined
with fantasy. The winner of the prestigious Dong-in Prize for Literature in
1979, A Dwarf Launches a Little Ball has remained on the steady best seller list
for over two decades.
