About This Book

The Wall Street Journal

K.J. Choi, in Seoul Friday. After one of those friends, Ha Yong-jo, the founder of Onnuri Church in Seoul, passed away last year, Mr. Choi decided to write the book. ¡°I realized I should be good to people when they are around me,¡± he said.

Called ¡°Korean Tank, Choi Kyung-ju,¡± the book is partly the tale of Mr. Choi¡¯s life, his youth on Wan Island off South Jeolla province, his improbable introduction to golf and his amazing entry to the U.S PGA Tour in 1994, at age 23. He is the first South Korean golfer to win a PGA tour card.

Beyond that success story, Mr. Choi said he wrote the book to impart an important belief of his to South Korean teenagers and young adults — that there is more than one path to success and that the pursuit of a goal is also about the process and path along the way, not just the goal itself.

¡°When you set a goal, it is easy to get caught up in the goal and forget the process,¡± he said. As a result, people become narrowly-focused and don¡¯t take consideration of other people who may be helping them or able to help them.

Mr. Choi writes that he had strong people who helped him realize that golf, something he loved, was a path to broader success in life rather than the be-all-end-all focus of his life. He describes in the book how his wife became one of them.

¡°From the beginning, people were telling me that I should be disciplined and follow certain guidelines,¡± Mr. Choi said. ¡°Don¡¯t fool around. Be devoted to the craft. Stay focused. Give back to the community. Pray.¡±

He¡¯s added a few rules for himself along the way, including being friendly to fans and making sure that his behavior will always make South Koreans proud.

Though he lives most of the year in Texas and on the road, Mr. Choi returns to South Korea annually. ¡°On the PGA scoreboards, there¡¯s a flag next to your name,¡± he said.
