About this book

John Grisham is an author who snagged the attention of 250,000,000 readers all over the world with his solid composition, quick unfolding of the story, and a cold outlook on various problems in society based on diligent data research. His ‘The Racketeer’ tells the story of former lawyer Malcolm Bannister, who lived in imprisonment for 5 years after his life was robbed from him by the federal government, as he jumps into investigations about the murder of a federal judge.

Grisham’s previous works told a narrative based on accuracy of a real story, but this novel is different because it “is a perfect fake that has almost no base on reality.” The main setting of the Frostburg Federal Prison and the uranium litigations also do not exist in real life. John Grisham merely said, “Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered.,” and imagined the murder of the 5th federal judge for his story.

A once-in-a-lifetime chance comes to former lawyer Malcolm Bannister, who had been at the Frostburg Federal Prison for 5 years. The fifth federal judge in US history had been murdered. As he knows the real culprit, he uses the federal law ‘Rule 35’. In exchange of revealing the criminal, he suggests that he is released into a new life. As soon as he leaves the prison, he starts the new life he’d planned for 5 years in prison.

Malcolm becomes an important witness to the case of the murdered judge. Afterword, he is reborn as Max Reed Baldwin through full-body plastic surgery and is protected by the FBI. However, he is chased by ones close to Quinn Rucker, the man who Malcolm had said was the criminal. The chase reveals his new face, new identity, and even his new home. Since he cannot believe anyone, including the FBI and the government, Malcolm even leave the FBI hanging. Malcolm, as a runaway, is headed toward the center of the murder of the judge, Roanoke.
