About This Book
The first full-length novel by Choi Eun-young, a celebrated author who has earned widespread reader support and critical acclaim since her literary debut for her deeply moving stories, lyrical and thoughtful prose, and the profound social concerns that lie at their heart. Carefully revised and refined after being serialized in the quarterly literary magazine Munhakdongne over the course of a year, from spring to winter 2020, this novel marks the author's first foray into the full-length form. It showcases her particular strengths as a storyteller, which have been especially evident in her novellas, including Shoko’s Smile, Hanji and Youngju, and A House Built of Sand, where she skillfully unfolds stories with depth and emotional resonance.
Bright Night traces the lives of four generations of women, from great-grandmother to grandmother, mother, and daughter, a story the author has carried in her heart for many years. Their lives unfold naturally across a century of history. As the narrative moves between the story that begins with the great-grandmother and reaches the narrator, and the story that starts with the narrator and reaches back toward the great-grandmother, the two gradually bridge the distance between them. Through this interweaving of stories, readers come to understand that passing stories from one person to another is also a process of sustaining one another, of keeping one another alive through a chain of shared breaths. This, too, is the fundamental power of storytelling itself.
