Cat School, the first fantasy series for children in Korea, began in the summer of 2001 with the first volume of Part 1, The Secret of the Crystal Cave. Part 1 concluded in 2002 with its fifth volume, The Mountain of Souls. Five years later, Parts 2 and 3, each consisting of three volumes, were published, bringing the expansive story to its conclusion after an eleven-volume journey.
With a devoted readership ranging from children to adults, Cat School opened up new possibilities for Korean children's literature. Hailed as “the arrival of a masterpiece,” the series attracted considerable attention from both critics and readers, and a fan community was established on major online portals. The books have since been published in France, Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Poland, Russia, and other countries, becoming a story enjoyed by children around the world. In 2006, the series won the Prix des Incorruptibles, a prestigious French children's and young adult literature award.
In 2022, twenty years after its original publication, Cat School was revised and reissued, covering Parts 1 and 2 of the three-part series. Passages and scenes that revealed the distance of two decades were refined, and the books were redesigned in a more child-friendly size that is easier for young readers to hold.
