About This Book
Winner of the 14th Honbul Literary Award, this novel delicately portrays the lives of modern urban dwellers who struggle with obsession and deprivation, self-harm and industrial accidents, trauma and anxiety, while striving to maintain the appearance of polished, successful lives. Ranging from economically stable middle-aged members of the middle class to young workers in their twenties and thirties scraping by with precarious livelihoods, the novel was selected for the award amid high praise for its ability to reveal the desires and wounds of the various classes that make up a city through richly layered and multifaceted characters.
The story is set in Songdo, a city built on reclaimed land from the sea. This newly developed urban landscape is filled with dizzyingly tall glass skyscrapers forming vast forests of steel and glass, where Pilates studios outnumber convenience stores and one can walk all day without seeing an elderly person. Like the sea buried beneath the towering skyline, desire constantly lurks beneath the refined facades of the citys inhabitants.
Seokjin, a doctor, and Sumi, the director of a Pilates center, also maintain what appears to be a stable marriage while concealing their own desires and emotional voids from one another. Sumi, for instance, secretly continues an affair with a younger boyfriend in his twenties who works as a fitness trainer, though she considers such behavior merely a minor immorality. But one day, Yuhwa, a factory worker from the industrial outskirts of the city, enters the hospital that lies at the center of Seokjin and Sumis carefully controlled world. From that moment on, yet another secret begins to take shape between the couple.
