About This Book
A young creator who spent their childhood and adolescence in Daechi-dong - often called the epicenter of private education - has published their first full-length novel. Soma, the author behind the widely discussed video "Daechi-dong and Depression," turns to fiction to confront the inner lives of teenagers who have long remained silent under the pressure of academic competition. The Children of Daechi-dong tells the story of Eun-a, a student navigating an environment where report cards become the language of love and exams determine the peace of a family.
At the age of nine, Eun-a has a realization on the day she earns perfect scores in every subject: a single flawless report card can stop her parents' daily arguments. From that moment on, studying ceases to be a source of joy and becomes a duty to protect her family. As she advances through school, grades are no longer a choice but a matter of survival. Her mother, Hyeran, pours all her time, energy, and money into Eun-a's academic success. Devotion gradually turns into obsession, and love deteriorates into control and violence. Within this oppressive environment, Eun-a relentlessly blames herself for her inability to fully concentrate on her studies.
Chaeyeon, a friend who grew up in the absence of care, envies Eun-a. She cannot understand how talent and support could lead to unhappiness. On the rooftop of cram schools where fluorescent lights never go out, the children gaze up at the sky. Looking down at the traffic jam of cars waiting to pick up students, their resolve to endure until the college entrance exam begins to waver. The idea of becoming an adult feels as distant and faint as finding stars in a big city.
The Children of Daechi-dong meticulously captures the distress signals sent by these fragile children in their own ways. At the same time, through the silence of the adults surrounding them, the novel asks what our society has chosen to ignore in the name of success.
