Fourteen-year-old Adunni lives in the village of Ikati, Nigeria. One morning, her father, who is perpetually drunk, informs her that because he has fallen behind on the rent, she must marry Morufu, an older taxi driver, as his third wife. Only a few months earlier, her mother passed away, leaving a final plea that, no matter what happened, Adunni must be allowed to go to school. But her father has no intention of honoring that promise. With the bride price, he plans to buy a new television, repay money borrowed from neighbors, and most of all, settle the overdue rent. The eldest son of the family, treated like a precious heirloom, knows nothing about housework, and Adunnis heart breaks at the thought of leaving behind her beloved younger brother, Kayus. All she wants is to go to school, get an education, and return to Ikati as a teacher for the village children. In Morufus house, where at night he takes strange herbal concoctions and treats her like an animal, Adunnis only source of comfort is the second wife, Khadija. The first wife, Labake, is outraged that her own daughter is the same age as Adunni and can barely contain her hostility, accusing Adunni of coming to steal her husband. Khadija has given birth to three daughters in a row. Morufu threatens that if the child she now carries is another girl, he will send her back to her sick parents. Instead, in the grand mansion of Big Madam and Big Daddy, she rises before dawn and works until late at night like a slave. Though she wears no chains, she endures constant scolding and abuse and receives little proper pay. Rebecca, who worked there before her, has vanished without a trace. Wearing Rebeccas old clothes and sleeping in her former room, Adunni cannot help but wonder what on earth happened to her.
