About This Book
Historian and writer Jun Bum-sun, a graduate of Minjok Leadership Academy and Dartmouth College who later pursued graduate studies in history at the University of Oxford, has published his first popular history book. Created in collaboration with SPNS TV, the book brings together his long-standing reflections on Korean identity as a historian with the collective trauma of Korean history, presenting history through the lens of healing.
Beginning with Choe Je-u's philosophy of Gaebyeok ("Great Opening") and Seo Jae-pil's spirit of independence, the book explores overlooked stories from Korean history that challenge one-dimensional and often biased interpretations. It examines, for example, the irony that Yi Wan-yong, remembered as a leading pro-Japanese collaborator, never learned a single word of Japanese throughout his life. It also traces a tradition of peace-oriented conservatism that transcended nationalism, as advocated by thinkers such as Ham Seok-heon and Ryu Young-mo.
The book also revisits the Gaebyeok philosophy of Donghak, which has long been overshadowed by the Western-centered narrative of "enlightenment" (gaehwa), and brings it into conversation with Homer Hulbert's appreciation of Korean culture and poet Kim Chi-ha's interpretation of the spirit of the Taegeuk. Through these connections, it offers readers a way to move beyond historical distortions and ideological divisions. By following the author's central question, "Can history heal our lives?", readers are invited to look beyond the wounds and upheavals of Korea's past and rediscover the vitality, joy, and creative spirit that form the heart of Korean history.
