About This Book

A landmark work that brought Korean literature to the global stage, Shin Kyung-sook’s bestselling novel Please Look After Mom returns to readers in a newly redesigned edition, 18 years after its original publication.

First published in 2008, Please Look After Mom moved readers around the world with its deeply moving portrayal of a missing mother’s life and love, sparking what became known as “Mom Syndrome” in Korea. The novel achieved remarkable success, selling more than 2.2 million copies in Korea and reaching readers in 42 countries worldwide. It became the first Korean novel to appear on The New York Times bestseller list and was named one of Amazon’s Top 10 Books of the Year in the Literature & Fiction category in 2011, marking a significant milestone in bringing Korean literature to a global audience.

The novel also received international recognition for its literary achievement when Shin Kyung-sook became the first Korean author to win the Man Asian Literary Prize. The judges praised it as “a beautiful and deeply moving story” whose distinctive structure set it apart from other shortlisted works, calling it a masterpiece that invites readers to reflect on the traditional and modern meanings of motherhood and family. Acclaim from major international publications followed, with The New York Times describing it as “so beautiful and unforgettable” and a story that delivers “powerful sadness,” while O, The Oprah Magazine called it “a novel you should pick up right now.”

The novel remains a landmark example of how a deeply personal and distinctly Korean family story can transcend cultural and national boundaries to become a universal narrative of love and loss.

This remastered edition features a beautifully redesigned cover and binding, along with an in-depth conversation between literary critic Shin Su-jeong and author Shin Kyung-sook, originally held around the time of the novel’s first publication. This special inclusion offers readers a rare opportunity to hear the author’s own reflections on the novel’s creation and the questions at the heart of the story.
