About This Book

The Talmud is a central text of Judaism, consisting of the Mishnah—which contains the orally transmitted laws of the Five Books of Moses (commonly called the Torah)—and the Gemara, a collection of rabbinic discussions and commentaries on the Mishnah. It is regarded not only as a sacred text of Judaism but also as a guide for Jewish family education. The Mishnah is traditionally believed to have been compiled by the Jewish rabbi Judah haNasi.

There are two main versions of the Talmud: the Jerusalem Talmud, compiled in Palestine around the 4th century, and the Babylonian Talmud, compiled in Mesopotamia around the 6th century. Today, when people refer to the Talmud, they generally mean the Babylonian Talmud. The original text is broadly divided into two parts: Halakha, legal discussions and interpretations of the Torah, and Haggadah, narratives and teachings containing the wisdom of the ancestors. It comprises a vast collection of 63 (or 64) tractates. Most popular editions of the Talmud published for general readers are summaries of the Haggadah.

The word “Talmud” in Hebrew means “learning” or “instruction.” True to its name, this book focuses on the lessons and wisdom that modern readers can learn from it. This edition is organized into four parts and 105 chapters: “The Wisdom of the Talmud That Changes Your Life,” “Teachings of the Talmud That Provide Answers to Life,” “Lessons of the Talmud That Show the Direction of Life,” and “Maxims of the Talmud That Illuminate Life.”

Since the original meaning of “Haggadah” is “story,” this edition has been adapted to highlight the charm of storytelling. Accompanied by color illustrations, it enables readers of all ages to approach the content easily and enjoyably. From children to young adults and seniors, readers of every generation will find it accessible, engaging, and filled with essential wisdom for life.
