An easy-to-read modern Korean military history that explores the roots of Korea’s military heritage from the late Joseon period to the present Republic of Korea Armed Forces. Although this period-from the end of the 19th century to modern times-has mostly been discussed in academic circles and has attracted little public attention, this work examines the flow of Korean military history and the Korean armed forces, tracing how they developed through various stages to become today’s Republic of Korea and its military.
In its first volume, the book illustrates the changes in uniforms, equipment, and military systems that Joseon experienced amid turbulent events-from the encounter with foreign powers during the French Campaign against Korea (Byeong-in Yangyo) and the United States expedition to Korea (Shinmi Yangyo), up to the time of the Donghak Peasant Revolution-as the nation was forced to join a new global current.
The authors present the story through meticulous historical research. Writer Kim Gi-yoon develops the narrative based on numerous documentary sources, while artists Wooyonggok, Chochohon, and Geumsu Panzer contribute over 100 detailed illustrations, maps, and graphs based on diverse historical materials. The book aims to offer a new perspective on an era once regarded as unfamiliar, outdated, or even shameful, allowing readers to appreciate the rich diversity of a time often remembered only in shades of gray.
