About This Book

Edna, who appears to lead a normal and happy life after marrying a wealthy businessman, spends the summer with her husband on Grand Isle, an island near New Orleans in the American South. There, amid the islands liberating atmosphere, the open sea, the sensual and candid relationships she observes among fellow vacationers, and the quiet moments of introspection, Edna gradually begins to listen to the long-suppressed desires within herself. She soon finds herself falling in love with Robert, the charming son of the cottage owner. Having always lived according to societys expectations of her as a woman and a mother, Edna experiences for the first time a profound sense of joy and liberation. Yet Robert, tormented by his feelings for a married woman, suddenly departs for Mexico. When Edna returns home from the resort, she begins to live in a way that is markedly different from before.

From that point on, she starts to view the conditions and conventions of her life through new eyes. Growing disillusioned with a marriage in which her husband regards her as a possession, she seeks a life guided not by social reputation, propriety, or duty, but by her own will. Instead of dutifully attending household gatherings, she immerses herself in painting and reading. She savors solitude, wandering alone in unfamiliar places, much to her husbands surprise. In a bold move toward financial independence, she even secures her own residence and moves out, demonstrating a striking break from convention. To her socially conscious husband, Edna becomes increasingly incomprehensible. Yet the more she defies expectations, the more she feels that she is delving deeper into the very foundations of life and coming to understand them more fully.

Although her various acts of resistance ultimately end in tragedy, reflecting the social constraints of her time, the novels progressive vision, keen insight, and refined narrative style, remarkable for a work written in the nineteenth century, continue to resonate deeply with readers today.
